Our Story

Campbelltown Theatre Group Inc. (CTGi) is a not-for-profit incorporated association, registered under NSW Fair Trading, proudly celebrating 70 years of community theatre in 2026. For seven decades, we have brought together people from all walks of life, united by a shared passion for the performing arts.

Our History

Our theatre society was formed following a public meeting on 21 June 1956, and staged our first production, The Pirates of Penzance, on 10 and 11 April 1957 at the Town Hall Theatre (formerly the Old Town Hall). This inaugural performance marked the beginning of a rich and enduring legacy in community theatre.

Over the past 70 years, we have presented more than 240 musical and dramatic productions, performing in venues throughout the Macarthur region, including Campbelltown High School, Airds High School, the Ingleburn Army Camp Theatre, and venues in Liverpool.

The Town Hall Theatre

Since 1980, CTGi has been proudly based in the historic Town Hall Theatre on Queen Street, following an agreement with Campbelltown City Council. Under the leadership of Gordon Fetterplace, members of the group worked closely with the Council to secure a NSW Government grant to upgrade the former Old Town Hall building to meet the requirements of the "Theatres and Public Halls Act 1908" and establish it as a dedicated theatre venue.

The refurbishment was made possible through financial contributions from the NSW Government, Campbelltown City Council, and the Campbelltown Theatre Group, supported by extensive volunteer labour from members and the accumulation of assets. Upon completion, the venue was officially renamed the Town Hall Theatre.

Now a local heritage‑listed building with 170 seats, the Town Hall Theatre has played many roles in the life of Campbelltown — including serving as a fire station and the town clerk’s office — and continues to be the creative home of Campbelltown Theatre Group.

What We Do

Our program extends beyond the production of classic musicals, contemporary Australian works and Shakespeare. We also deliver youth theatre programs, classes, workshops, and work placement learning opportunities for local students. Over the years, Campbelltown Theatre Group has been a vital breeding ground for local talent both on and off the stage, with many members going on to professional careers in the arts.

Today, we have more than 130 active members, ranging in age from seven to over seventy, and continues to captivate audiences with high‑quality, affordable productions that consistently meet professional standards. As the oldest and largest theatrical company in the Macarthur region, we proudly serve audiences across the Greater Sydney, Illawarra and Southern Highlands regions.

Our Community

Like many community theatre companies across Australia, Campbelltown Theatre Group operates entirely on a volunteer basis, with no permanent paid staff. Members generously contribute their time, skills and resources, and all income is reinvested into future productions and the ongoing maintenance of our assets.

We are committed to being a leader in the local arts community by producing a diverse range of theatrical works and welcoming anyone with an interest in the performing arts, regardless of experience. Our continued success for nearly seven decades is a testament to the passion, talent and community spirit of our members.
